Guide (1965) – Part 3

Well, when the music composer Sachin Dev Burman himself sings two songs out of ten magnificent compositions he created for this film, I choose to place him up here in this post. Perhaps I will also add a devotional song that he gets Manna Dey to sing.

Shailendra earned full marks for both, his contributions to this film, and to Hindi Cinema. He drew the very best of himself and gave his all to ‘Guide’, although he worked with other composers, and was immersed in producing his own “Teesri Kasam” that had already been five years into its making. Based on Phanishwarnath Renu’s short story, ‘Maare Gaye Gulfam’ (1954), the film was released in 1966, but failed at the box-office. Perhaps this was among the prime reasons for 43-year old Shailendra’s untimely death on December 14, 1966.

In Teesri Kasam, which started production in 1961 but which saw the light of day only in 1966, Waheeda Rehman played the role of a dancer. The film was in black-and-white. In Guide too she played the role of a dancer, and the film met with stupendous success. It was released a year earlier than Teesri Kasam. Her screen chemistry with suave Dev Anand was one that perhaps paled her screen presence with the country bloke image of Raj Kapoor in Teesri Kasam. Perhaps the viewers rejected that. I thought this was interesting, and would draw attention to my observations here.

Both films were multi-layered, with a focus on social norms of the times pretty much entrenched in the picture. Both films had mega stars. Both films had music teams that had been huge successes for the most part. Teesri Kasam had top level composers Shankar-Jaikishan, Shailendra’s close colleagues for almost twenty years. Yet, the public rejected Teesri Kasam, as a film. Its music though is popular to this day. The film did earn a National Award; but Shailendra’s kids lost their father, his wife was torn with grief, and burdened with responsibilities that was not filmi tear-jerking melodrama but intensely real.

Fans would remember Bandini (1963) where Sachin Dev Burman and Shailendra had given us outstanding music. The songs in this post are also in a class of their own.

Need to catch your breath eh? Honestly, I certainly am breathless…
